Hitch's VHS Collection: Sprite: Between Two Worlds

For those who don't know, I have a hobby of collecting anime movies and series on VHS. Why? Cause I like the format and there are a lot of movies that are on VHS, but not on DVD. Sure you can get them digitally if you look hard enough, but I love going to a used media store, finding a random title and seeing something I haven't heard of before.

I have a lot of tapes, most of which are in boxes in the shed right now, but most of the tapes I have I haven't gotten around to watching due to my crazy work schedule. But last night after giving up on beating God of War on Hard, I went and had a double feature of two random titles I picked up awhile ago, one of which was: "Sprite: Between Two Worlds."

Sprite: Between Two Worlds is a three episode OVA series. It was classified when I bought it as Hentai, but after watching it, the series is more Ecchi than anything else. The story centers around a young man (Who's name escapes me at the moment and we'll just call him Jim) who moves in with his relatives after his mother becomes ill. Here he meets the family's only child, his cousin Manami.

While on the surface, Manami is an innocent carefree girl, within her subconscious is another personality named, Nanami, who is desperately trying to escape and take complete control. While Nanami has only been a bad dream to Manami in the past, when she meets "Jim", the Nanami personality is set free whenever "Jim" mispronounces her name. By now, I'm sure you're thinking, "Split personalities in a hentai, clearly one is a slut and the other is innocent." Well, you not right, but not completely wrong either. While Nanami is more flirtatious and outgoing about her sexual nature, she's not a nymphomaniac. Nanami is more outgoing in general, not just when it comes to sex. She stands up for herself, she picks fights, she'll call people out on their bullshit and other things of that nature. The original personality, Manami is more submissive and quiet than her counterpart.

The thing I liked the most about this series is how it plays with the idea of split personalities. Nanami is more than just another person living inside Manami. She's a personification of her growing curiosity about adult matters. Not just sex, but learning how to take care of your own problems and how handle interacting with people you do and do not like. She's what Manami thinks an adult should be, not necessarily an adult version of her character. Manami is in a complete child like state of mind, while Nanami is a complete opposite. Manami's problem is she has no idea how to balance these two states of mind and doesn't know how to control going between them. The series uses Manami to capture that odd time period in a young person's life where they don't exactly know how to act their age, and for the most part the series does its job to convey this idea, but doesn't exactly knock it out of the park either.

There's not much actual sex going on in this series, mostly just different variations of oral sex. Virginity plays a major part in this series and the series treats it like its the one moral fiber standing between being a slut and being curious about one's sexual development. While I personally think that's a load of bull, in this series it works cause the series uses it in the plot. At one point, Namami is going to throw her virginity away to a complete stranger (or at least a character we've never meet up until this point, this section of the series is covered way too fast), but when the deed is about to be performed, Manami stamps back into control and the action allows the two personalities to finally talk to each other. So again, I think its an outdated ideal, but the way they use it in the plot is nice.

Outside of the voice acting, the biggest weakness of this series is the animation. There's one fun fight in the first episode where Namani beats the crap out of some girls after they concern her behind the school, which ends with Namani removing the defeated women's underwear and forces them to wear it on their head, but all of the other moments are completely forgettable visually. There are some trippy moments where the two personalities are talking to each other, but everything else is just generic slap stick, static scenery, talking heads and worst of all, under the sheets, above the stomach, and motionless sex scenes. Its easy to take your eyes off the screen and just listen to what's going on. Almost to the point where it should be an audio drama.

So to wrap up my thoughts on this one, I don't regret buying it. The story, while not the best and its strongly debatable if it succeeds or not, is interesting and the dub is always good for a laugh ("He is my relative's child"). While I can't recommend hunting this one down, if you come across it on a streaming site, go for it.

Although, one last thing. On the back of the box there's an image of Manami wearing a really sexy S&M outfit and none of that is found in the show itself. LAME!!!

Double Zeta Update 5/30/13: Robot Carnival Project

Time for an update on the Double Zeta site!

While I do have video reviews planned, including more Late Night Humor and Hitch Plays, there's one big project I want to work on and it mixes into my college work.

One of my classes in college was Scriptwriting II, where I wrote a late of material for the purposes of using them later down the road. If you want a current example of my writing check out my short Penny, which was written and directed by me. But the second biggest project I'm proud of that came from the class was my adaptation script.

The assignment was to write a 15 page script based around a short story or a short film. The twist on the project was we could not recreate the story in script format, and it was demanded that we make changes to the story and not follow the story beat per beat. Being the dork that I am, I picked the animated short, Starlight Angel from the movie, Robot Carnival.

If you haven't seen it, take ten minutes and watch it.

The biggest change I made was that I added dialog. I also made some changes in the ending, which I'm currently keeping to myself. Outside of that, its pretty much the same story about a girl falling in love with a robot at an amusement park.

The final draft I turned in to the class and presented was well received and I was mostly marked off for my grammar and spelling. More importantly though, I am extremely proud of this piece and I want to display it on my website as further example of my writing ability.

Well here's the problem. I don't want to post my scripts online. I don't like the idea of posting my professionally written scripts and someone using it to taking credit for my work. If they asked me about it, I'd talk, but very little people on the internet ask permission for things that aren't their's.

So my work around not putting up the script is to make a video using the script, and this is where I need help.

I HAVE LITTLE CONNECTIONS TO VOICE ACTORS

I have some friends who might be willing to help out with the project, but I would like to search outside my normal circle to get help on this one.  So I'm putting this out there.

If anyone is interested in helping me with some voice work, please contact me via e-mail at cjhitchcock@doublezetaproductions.com

What do you get out of it?

Simply put, I have no money and the best I can offer is letting those who help me with this project use the final product in any way they see fit after its posted. So let's say your an up and coming voice actor, and your building your demo real to present to FUNimation for that upcoming audition for the role of Ranma in their new redub of the series (a guy can dream can't he?). Well if you work for me, you are more than welcome to use the audio and video (your choice which you wanna use) from this project in your demo real. Also if you want to use me as a reference, go for it. I'm all about helping people who help me out and this is the best way I know how I can help. Again if you can think of something else, hit me up on my e-mail and we'll talk.

What am I looking for?

There are 6 parts I'm looking to fill. They are:
Allison - A shy 16 year old girl
Molly - A 16 year old tomboy (Female)
R.O.B. - The charming 16 year old male robot (with both robotic and human voices)
Child 01 - A young bratty child
Announcer - The booming voice that rings over the park
Fred - The sleazeball ex-boyfriend

If your interested in a part, please contact me telling me which part your interested in, along with an example of your voice work, and I'll contact you.

Is There a Deadline?

As of right now, no. I'm not sure how many responses I'll get from this, but I'll keep this blog and my twitter updated on where I'm at with the project.

What will the script look like?
Here's a pic, and I'll send all those interested the whole file via e-mail

This is a big project and if this goes well, I'd like to try something similar with another series of scripts I have.

Anyhow, thank you for your time and please feel free to contact me.

New Blog, Same Hitch

Hey guys,

I'm starting up two blogs. One is going to be for Season Impressions (I'll explain later) and the other is going to be a personal blog about what's been going on in my day to day life.

Let me get the Season Impressions blog out of the way. With the way my living conditions are, I am unable to record and produce videos for Season Impressions. I'm currently in that period where I've graduated from college and I'm still looking for a real job connected with my own living space, but for now I live with my parents and my recently graduated from high school sister. While my parents have been supportive of my online endeavors, I have no right to ask them to give me some quite time to record a video about cartoon high school girls from another country. I don't like to be rude, especially since I'm 22 and still relaying on my folks for a place to live. That along with working a 40 hour work week that keeps switching between day and night shift, I'm having difficulties finding time to record much of anything, let alone Season Impressions.

BUT ALL IS NOT LOST!!!

While I haven't been able to record, I've been able to write and all of the reviews for this Spring 2013's shows have been written since their first episodes came out. I've been sitting on them, waiting to record, but seeing how difficult it is to find time to record, I'm just going to post the written first impressions. By doing this, my first impressions will be posted faster, and it will leave me room to work on other videos for Double Zeta Productions. The format will be the same as the videos and I'm going to see if I can still do a Final Impressions video at the end of the season, but don't hold your breath on that one.

Ok, now that my little rant on Season Impressions is over, let's talk about the purpose of this blog.

Ultimately it comes down to this, I have a lot on my mind and I don't think they are fitting for a V-log or a podcast. Some thoughts are meant to be written down and read. Chances are high most of them will be pretty long like this post, but I have been thinking a lot lately about my life, where I'm going, where it could go, what I've done and I feel as though I need to keep a journal of it. Why? So I can read it back to myself and make sure I'm not fucking crazy.

Side story: One day, my mother accused me of not believing in free will and I sat up the entire night just thinking about how much free will is an illusion and how everything is a big cooperation looking to suppress the little man.

After having that one night of mild insanity, I knew I needed a little bit of self reflection and writing my thoughts and actions down will be a good way of keeping myself in check.

So what exactly am I going to be writing about:
1. My friends and I are looking to open a Comic Book Store / Arcade Bar
2. My current job in over the phone tech support
3. My job hunt
4. Past fuck ups
5. My mind set
6. My plans for the Double Zeta site
7. Whatever the hell is on my mind

After writing this post, I'm going to write an actual post about what I want to work on next for the site, to give a better example of what the blog will be like.

Oh and I plan to redesign this blog later in the future when I have time.

I hope you'll read along and I hope this presents a better picture of myself outside of just another guy on the internet who's not able to post videos on a normal schedule. Although you know what would fix that problem, getting paid for it. Sorry its the truth... =/

Anyhow, this is Hitch signing out!
